VAR set to be used in the 2018 Copa Libertadores from the quarter-finals

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the current Copa Libertadores from the quarter-final stage onwards, after being tested in the semi-finals and final in the 2017

The new technological advance was confirmed in Moscow by CONMEBOL president Alexander Domínguez. “I like VAR and I believe it is here to stay,” Domínguez explained as he announced the decision.

The quarter-finals will take place between September 18 and October 4. The system will be implemented in all eight games. In 2017 VAR was used in the semi-finals (River-Lanús and Gremio-Barcelona) and in the deciding match (Gremio-Lanús).

The technology will also be present from the last eight onwards in the Copa Sudamericana as well as the Recopa Sudamericana. VAR will only be active in four instances: goals, penalties, red cards and confusion over a player's identity.
