Marcelo Gallardo spoke from the heart, full of emotion, his voice sounding hoarse, but with the conviction he's known for. He walked out onto the pitch with the CONMEBOL Libertadores trophy in his hands, then lifted it up again alongside Leonardo Ponzio and Jonatan Maidana. The coach took the microphone - and centre stage - to talk with the supporters about his feelings after they beat Boca Juniors in the Santiago Bernabéu two weeks ago.
"We won the final everyone had been dreaming about. We will never forget it; it'll be eternal," el Muñeco said at the end of his speech.
"Thank you for being here, thank you for accompanying us, encouraging us and all the love you've given us over the years," was how Gallardo began. "I want to share this moment with the whole group of players who I truly value. I want to thank my coaching staff, everyone else who has helped, all the family members and those who work every day."
He finished with this: "When we won the Copa Libertadores in 2015, I told you we would win more. We didn't just go for more, but we won the final everyone had been dreaming about. We will never forget it. Thank you everyone. You deserve this. It'll be eternal."
