Lionel Messi made it 3-2 in the final minute at the Santiago Bernabeu, went over to the crowd and showed his number 10 shirt to the whole world.
Cristiano Ronaldo, in the Spanish Super Cup, at the Camp Nou, scored a magnificant goal and raised his number 7 shirt while the planet applauded.
José Balza is a talented 21-year-old. He's part of the greatest youth team in Venezuelan football's history, coming through in the U20 Sudamericana and in the U20 World Cup in 2017. Balza kept running in the final minute, without almost no air left in his lungs, to take advantage of Gustavo Dulanto's slip. He claimed the ball and ran through towards the goalkeeper to score a goal which made history. Deportivo La Guaira, the only side making their debut in this season's CONMEBOL Libertadores, move onto Phase 2.
Next week, in Caracas, they'll host Atlético Nacional. The team from Medellin have already won the Libertadores twice whilst La Guaira are making their first strides into South America's biggest tournament. Balza is a 21-year-old who has a brief stay in Chilean football with Unión Española. Before then, he'd left Carabobo. And now he's beginning to make his mark in world football.
"I'm very happy for the opportunity the coach gave me. I'll keep working hard in training to have more chances and look to take advantage of them. I'm at a team with high quality players and who know each other well. I know it won't be easy but I know it's a daily competition and the whoever is the best will be in the coach's plans," he declared last year after joining La Guaira. His arrival is thanks to Daniel Farias.
Farias prepared for this physical battle. They prepared for the game in La Paz so they wouldn't struggle against the altitude in Cuzco. Balza, who didn't have a great game, appeared in the final minutes to leave his mark. He sprinted away from the defenders to get one-on-one with the keeper and finished with precision. And he raised his number 10 shirt aloft like the biggest players in the world.
